Kitten SPIDERS! Supplies needed for each spider: 2 1/2 Chenille pipe cleaners for each spider . Pipe cleaners that are variegated thick and narrow work best, (fuzzier in one place than the other.) 1) Take two 12" chenille pipe cleaners and twist together, (just as you would a twist-tie) interweaving them.. not tightly but rather in between the narrow parts of the pipe cleaners Don't worry about the ends staying twisted, these are going to be the legs and won't remain twisted together when you finish the spider. 3) Take one 12" chenille pipe cleaner and cut in half. 4) Take two pipe cleaners that are twisted together and cross the ends about 2" 1/2" and twist over each other once. 5) Take the one 6" piece cut from the third pipe cleaner and lay it over the twisted parts of dual pipe cleaners. Twist one against ONE of the two, then twist the second over the OTHER of the dual pair. 6) Now hold the whole twisted section and 'fold' back toward the rounded section. You're flipping it back where the twists won't show as much because they'll be 'under' the spider. Take each leg and run your finger from the body to the end 'bending' the pipe cleaner and giving it a curve so it looks like a leg. Do this with each leg. To finish be certain to fold the very tips of the legs back on themselves. HINT: If you're making a large number of these, you might want to use a small pair of needle nosed pliers to save your fingers!) The ends have bare wire and shouldn't be left exposed where they can injure soft flesh! You can use hot glue to coat the end of each 'foot' if you wish for a more permanent solution but it's wise to fold over the ends, some cats will chew off the hot glue! After you've made a few and experimented a little, try adding beads! See if you can figure out how to make the bead the spider's eye! Cats love these. They tromp on them, flip them in the air. In fact, the cat's person may have to put the curve back in the legs after the cats have had their spiderman party! And, remember to periodically check to be certain the ends of the legs are not bare wire! If you have a great fund raising item that you make, please share. Non profits all over the country are looking for ideas to help support spay neuter and their animal rescue endeavors. Even small and inexpensive things like these spiders. These sell well at conventions, ask if you can put them on the counter at your vet's office! Let's Neuter! Kat - aka The Neuteress of the Night neuteress@ahimsatx.org |
